What are the signs of dyslexia?: 1. An introduction

1. An introduction

Dyslexia can affect different people at different ages in different ways and its effects can range from mild to severe.

Children can display signs of dyslexia from an early age - as young as 3 or 4 years old - but it is usually not formally identified until the age of 6 or 7.  Encouraging your child's reading from a young age will help develop your child's confidence and ability.

Indicators for dyslexia

The indicators on the next pages give an overview of the types of difficulties a dyslexic person may have at different ages and may be used as a guide to spotting signs of dyslexia. They are not exhaustive lists, and are not intended as screening tools or diagnostic assessments.

With one in 10 of the population estimated to have dyslexia, more than 6.3 million people in the UK are potentially affected by dyslexia.
