Executive Team

Our Executive Team are responsible for the day-to-day running of the organisation and report to the Trustee Board.

Matthew Simkins, Interim Chief Executive

Matthew joined Dyslexia Action in January 2017 bringing with him a wealth of experience in the commercial, charity and not for profit sectors. He has held positions both in financial and company leadership, working together with shareholders, directors and trustees to create compelling strategy direction and operational efficiency.

Matthew is a guest lecturer at the CASS business school, London, has created and chaired courses for R3 and the IFT, and was awarded a Judges Commendation at the IFT annual awards in 2008 for his role with the Charles Darwin Foundation.

He has been actively involved in multiple charities and is passionate and committed to Dyslexia Action’s cause. He believes strongly in the need to effectively support those with literacy and numeracy difficulties, dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties and understands the impact that this help can have through his experience of supporting a close family member with dyslexia.

 

John Rack, Director of Education and Policy 

John Rack
John Rack is a Chartered Psychologist and HCPC Registered Educational Psychologist. He has worked in the field of Special Educational Needs for over 25 years, first as a researcher then as an educational psychologist. For the past ten years, he has lead Dyslexia Action in the evaluation and development of its professional services, and most recently have been working with, and trying to influence, Government in reforming legal and professional guidance frameworks in the UK. 

 

Matthew Wilkie, Human Resources Director

Matthew Wilkie
Matthew has operated as a Human Resources generalist for many years across a number of different sectors, both public and private. He headed up the Human Resources functions for both QP Group, a procurement consultancy, and Astraeus, a Gatwick-based airline, before joining Dyslexia Action in early-2012.



Management Team

The Management Team offers additional support to the Executive Team. 

 

Kathryn Benzine, Head of Education and Training

Kathryn Benzine
Kathryn’s background is in education management, training and careers. She joined Dyslexia Action in 2010 having previously worked as Director of Professional Development at the Institute of Hospitality where she led on CPD and qualification development. Her previous roles included Project Director for CADISE, a consortium of art and design colleges, and Head of Careers Service at the University of Roehampton. 

 

Becky Whitman, Head of Marketing and Fundraising

Becky Whitman

Becky joined the marketing and communications team at Dyslexia Action in August 2013. Prior to joining, Becky worked in marketing and fundraising within the cultural sector, heading up the membership team at the National Maritime Museum and the marketing and communications team at The Lightbox gallery and museum. Since October 2016 Becky has been overseeing both the marketing and fundraising departments.  

 

Alison Keeley, Regional Manager, Southern and Devolved

Alison Keeley
Alison joined Dyslexia Action in September 2014.  She started her career as a primary school teacher, ultimately becoming a Deputy Headteacher before moving to the charity sector in 2012.  Alison worked as the Head of Education for the national bookgifting charity Booktrust before joining Dyslexia Action.

 

Catherine Wright, Regional Manager, Central and Northern 

Cath Wright

Catherine joined Dyslexia Action as a Principal for the Lincoln Centre in 2010 after three years she was promoted to Central Regional Manager. She is now supporting the West Midlands, East Midlands, Yorkshire and North East Dyslexia Action Hubs.  Prior to working for Dyslexia Action Catherine carried out senior management roles in Further Education College focusing on additional learning support and service departments.

 

 

Margaret Rooms, Head of Units of Sound Development

Margaret Rooms has worked for Dyslexia Action since 1992, when she joined as a Senior Teacher. As Head of Educational Development she was part of the Senior Management Team for more than 12 years. She has developed many new literacy products but is now concentrating on Units of Sound.

 

Nicola Amoroso, Marketing and Communications Manager

Nicola joined Dyslexia Action in 2014 in the fundraising department, moving over to lead the marketing and communications department in 2015. Nicola has experience in marketing, journalism, editing, design, PR and social media as well as experience in the charity sector through her role of founding trustee of a small cancer charity. Prior to working for Dyslexia Action, Nicola was Editorial Director for a B2B publishing company.

 

Sanja Shea, Senior Trust and Statutory Fundraising Manager 

Sanja Shea

Sanja joined Dyslexia Action in November 2013 and is responsible for the development and management of the Trust fundraising strategy and for generating income form grant makers such as trusts, foundations and Big Lottery Fund. Sanja has been working in Fundraising for over 17 years, mainly in the international aid, education and health sectors and has had several roles prior to joining Dyslexia Action, including: Senior Partnership Development Manager role at The Children’s Society, Corporate Fundraising at Care International, Charity of the Year programme at Diabetes UK, among others. Her educational background is in Applied International Development & Policy and also in Linguistics. 

 

Tracey Burt, Trading Manager

Tracey joined Dyslexia Action in June 1996 and has worked in a variety of departments including Finance and Marketing. She has been involved with the Trading arm of the charity since its inception and became Manager in 2006. 

 

 

Karen Hurn, HR Administration and Payroll Manager

Karen joined the organisation in May 2004 and has worked in a variety of departments including Finance and Payroll. She has been involved in the centralising of all classic HR activities that were undertaken across the organisation into one function, overseeing the implementation of an HR Database, of which My Info is the staff portal into, and the integration of how we pay employees. Karen’s broader role sees her managing many ongoing work streams which include the issuing of terms and conditions of employment, recruitment, employment records, payroll and benefits, DAVE and DBS.

 

Tim Donne, IT Manager

Tim has worked in IT for over 20 years,  joining Dyslexia Action in 2007 as the IT Manager with responsibility for our internal IT department.  He previously worked for Mattel and Fisher-Price both in IT support and forecasting, and for a software distribution company before that.
