Please support the dyslexia training for teachers petition

11 April 2012
Please support the petition for dyslexia and Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs) to be a compulsory part of Initial Teacher Training (ITT). Currently 20% of children are not meeting expected levels in literacy and there are as many as 2 - 3 children in every classroom who are affected by dyslexia. The biggest barrier to children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is the lack of expertise within the education system to identify those at risk and to provide the right help and support for those children struggling to develop good literacy skills.

The British Dyslexia Association (BDA) have initiated a petition to make dyslexia/SpLD training mandatory to Initial Teacher Training (ITT). At present there is no compulsory minimum level of Dyslexia/SpLD training required to pass the ITT course.

There have been a number of reviews over the last 5 years, including Sir Jim Rose's Review in 2009 that have all highlighted the need for different levels of training and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for all teaching staff. This has included recommending that ITT should include Dyslexia/SpLD. Therefore we are asking you to support the campaign for inclusion of a mandatory dyslexia module within the ITT course.

If 100,000 people sign the petition this issue will have to be debated in the House of Commons. The petition will only run for a year so we ask that you sign the petition as soon as possible and share with friends, loved ones and anyone who cares about the education our children receive.

Dyslexia does not have to be a barrier to learning and by informing those teaching our children we can help more children get the education they deserve. To sign the petition and make a difference please click here.
